This boy...

... melts me. I mean seriously, when did he get so big?? He is long overdue for a post about all things 5 1/2. Well, he was 5 1/2 in August but better late than never! He has grown and changed so much since turning 5. Literally, he has grown almost 3 inches but he is growing in every other way too.

He is LOVING and thriving in Kindergarten. He loves his school, loves his teacher and loves all the new friends he has made. We are so blessed by his teacher, she truly is amazing. She gets his sensitive personality and gives him a little extra grace. At our first parent teacher conference, the biggest thing she had for us to work on is how he handles disappointment. This is something we have been working on with him at home for as long as I can remember but he has taken HUGE strides since starting school. He hardly ever loses it anymore and that typically only happens if he is really tired. We are so proud of him academically. He is READING. As a teacher, I heard "just wait until they are ready" so many times but didn't really believe it until it was my kid. He has known his letter sounds and been sounding out short words for years but just hasn't shown much interest in sitting down and reading through a book. Just a couple of weeks ago, it clicked and now he is reading everything in sight. He comes home with a new home reader every day and it still amazes me to hear him read me a story. We were a little concerned about him starting at a new school and not knowing anymore but he is so outgoing and has made lots of new friends at his school that he talks about all the time. He says his favorite thing to do as school is writer's workshop but he also really seems to love his bible class. He is really starting to put things together and ask a lot of insightful questions. He got in the car the other day after school with a huge smile on his face and I said "wow you must've had a good day" and he beamed and said "we finally got to my name in our books of the bible song!" Apparently there are a few biblical names in his class and he couldn't wait to get to his name.

As far as activities go, swimming is still his favorite. For the fall, he didn't want to play any sports, he just wanted to swim. So, he has been in a weekly swim class to work on his mechanics and it is one of the highlights of his week each week. He keeps telling us he is going to win the high point trophy next summer. His other favorite activity is riding his bike, without training wheels. This should've been a blog post all on its own but I keep forgetting to get video footage of it. My sweet boy who wouldn't walk until he could walk across the room was not going to ride his bike until he could ride down the street and back without assistance. Well, he finally mastered that right before school started in August and hasn't slowed down since. It is so fun to take afternoon bike rides together. He has also become quit the little climber. He so wishes that we had a climbing tree but since we don't, I find him climbing all over our swing set/fort thing. It is terrifying how many times I have found him on top of the fort.

My big boy is still such a sweet and sensitive boy. While at times this presents us with challenges, I am seeing the little person that God has created him to be and the gentle spirit that he has and it is really special. He has such a tender heart and is so much like his daddy in this way.   He and Laurel are NOTHING alike in this regard and I joke that while she will be the one breaking hearts someday, I fear he will be the one getting is sweet heart broken. David takes him to school each morning and he can't leave without giving me a huge hug and telling me he loves me which just makes me melt. As all 5 year olds are, he keeps me laughing all day. I need to be better about writing down the things he says but I'll end with one of my favorites as of late. David and I were about to leave for Connor's birthday dinner and I came out of my room all dressed up with red lipstick on. Micah looks up at me and says "oh wow mommy, you look so pretty! I like your red lips!" and I said thank you, gave him a hug and walked into the kitchen. He then turned to our friends (who were watching the kids for the night) and said "I just made her day."

Here are a few pictures of my 5 1/2 year old from the last couple of months...
He had a kindergarten bug collection and while he has some help, he did a GREAT job with it! He loves it when I visit him at school for lunch (top right, bottom right). One of my favorite things about his teacher is that she will periodically text me pictures or funny quotes from his day. His class got to watch the whole life cycle of a butterfly start to finish and this picture (middle right) was the day they let their butterflies go.
Not that Micah has ever really been afraid of Santa but this year, he walked right up to him and proceeded to tell him all the things he wanted for Christmas.

These 3 are randoms... getting his teeth cleaned without a single complaint (which is better than his daddy), getting to be on the field before an Aggie football game and crashing on the couch. He swears up and down he doesn't need a nap anymore but somedays, he is just wiped out.

Micah is just a little bit into the Ninja Turtles right now so when he sees a sewer, he has to look for them... and then practice his ninja moves, of course!

I'm so proud of my 5 1/2 year old, he is such a blessing to our little family.
